Taking a Break this Season

Movie Club Members (past and present),

I’m writing you to let you know that the Movie Club will be taking a break this season (2010-2011). During the 2010 season we found that attendance was noticeably dwindling, and, for the first time, we were no longer covering our exhibition costs.

As a non-theatrical venue doing licensed exhibition, our choice of mainstream artistic films has been limited to a small subset of those already available on DVD. Our distributors also restrict the types of advertising that we may do. Operating within these limits, it is hard to imagine what we could do differently to ensure that we cover our expenses in the future.

With this in view, our board has voted to donate the balance of the Ouray Movie Club’s checking account and our capital items (movie screen and popcorn machine) to The Friends of the Wright Opera House.

It is our hope that the Movie Club finds a new home in future years under the auspices of “the Friends of the Wright.” If you would like to make sure that the tradition of the Movie Club continues in Ouray, I urge you to step up and make a donation to Friends of the Wright, if you haven’t already done so. Once the Friends have acquired the Wright, I will gladly provide guidance to them with regard to screening movies in the future. If you would like to help with a future movie club at the Opera House, please drop me a line by email and I will create a list of interested volunteers to provide to the Friends.

Thanks to all of you who have supported us over the years and to Dan King and Sandra Boles who helped get the Movie Club off of the ground many years ago. Also thanks to everyone who volunteered their time operating popcorn machines, selling tickets, sweeping up, helping us assemble or disassemble the screen, etc. Special thanks to the following volunteers (in no particular order): Myrna Spaulding, Sandra Boles, , Kathleen Norris Cook, Carla Deger, June Kirchner, Suzie Jones, and John Draper. Forgive me if I’ve overlooked anyone.

Synopsis:
A gifted and well-qualified young teacher takes a job teaching natural sciences at a grammar school in the country. Here he makes the acquaintance of a woman and her troubled 17-year old son. 2009-2010 Season Starts in December

The Ouray Movie Club is back at the Wright Opera House for our 2009-2010 Season. We are pleased to announce that at the end of the season, our profits will be donated to Friends of the Wright Opera House.

We will begin with two screenings in December (2009). Our premier will be on Friday December 11th followed by a second screening on the evening of Saturday December 26th. All other screenings are scheduled on the first and fourth Fridays of the month. There will be a total of ten movies shown through April, 2010. A season membership will once again be available.

We'll publish more details including movie titles shortly on this site and by our e-mail list.

The Ouray Movie Club's 2009 season will begin in just under one month! This season we'll be screening our award-winning independent and art films in the spectacular Tundra dining room of the Beaumont Hotel.

Looking for the perfect night out in Ouray? Renowned Chef Peter O'Brien will be making a special dinner available to movie viewers who are interested. Additional information on how to reserve your table will follow soon.

Show times will again be at 6:30 pm on the first and third Fridays of the month from January through May 2009.

There has been much confusion on the streets of Ouray, the Ouray Movie Club is not the same as the Friday Night Movie Club. The Friday Night Club is being run by the Ouray Entertainment Company and is not affiliated with us. We will continue to show the best in film festival, independent, and award winning movies at the Opera House, twice a month, starting on or about January 2008.

Theatre of the Mind

Before film there was radio, "theatre of the mind." You are invited to experience "War of the Worlds." The classic Halloween radio drama will air tonight at 7 pm on 98.9 FM KURA. The War of the Worlds was first performed as a Halloween radio special on October 30, 1938. The original broadcast made history in when it was mistaken for an actual news broadcast and panic ensued.

If you enjoy radio drama, stay tuned; KURA plans to air Ouray's own homegrown adaption of "A Christmas Carol", to be broadcast live from the Wright Opera House. More info on this event is forthcoming.

KURA broadcasts from the Ouray School. Daytime programming and community bulletin boards are managed by our students at the Ouray School. I'm working on keeping the dinner time jazz (5-7 pm) and evening Rock and Roots shows rolling and helping out some of our community DJs.

Winter Movies Return to Ouray

The re-opening of the historic Wright Opera House is not only cause for celebration, it is also the perfect venue for enjoying artsy/edgy/fun award winning movies through the winter months in Ouray.

We are working on an incredible lineup of award winning movies including independent festival selections that you won't be able to find on DVD. It's like having a film festival all winter long in Ouray.

We've been working with Kevin and Mel at Ouray Entertainment to get a great sound system and screen in place. Ethan Funk is donating the use of his incredible high def. DLP projector. Kevin and Mel are working to get rid of those old seats and get some new comfy seating. All in all, it should be an incredible venue for watching movies and socializing.
